After seven years of consistent and persistent pressure, Durham CAN won another important victory for affordable housing in Durham.

At a time when nearly one in three Durham families struggles to afford housing, Durham CAN has stayed focused on the need for lasting solutions.

Durham CAN secured Durham City Council’s support for a $26 million redevelopment of the old police headquarters site into a seven-story building with 85 new affordable rental units.

"We will continue to fight until we see the ribbon cutting, until we see the units open, until individuals moving in can finally say, 'I have affordable housing" - Ketty Thelmaque, lead organizer for Durham CAN.

This victory came months after Durham CAN celebrated two major affordable housing wins: 367 affordable housing units on County-owned land and 252 affordable rental units at The Villages of Hayti for families earning between 30% and 80% of the area median income.
