Durham CAN Clergy and lay leaders celebrated yet another victory in affordable housing!

In 2018, when the former Durham Police Headquarters became vacant, Durham CAN called City elected leaders to approve mixed-use development. The 4-acre site was the largest city-owned vacant tract left downtown. Over the last six years, CAN led a series of public actions and negotiations with three different mayors.

Today, CAN leaders proudly celebrate 92 units affordable to families at or below 60 percent of the area median income. The approved $285 million development will also lead a series of public actions and negotiations with three different mayors, including a grocery store, offices for nonprofits, parking, and a hotel.

Durham CAN has organized and won 1,000 new units of housing affordable to families in Durham in the last eight years.
