On July 14th, at Dabar Bethlehem Cathedral, 576 Queens Power and EBC leaders turned out to demonstrate strong support for Public Land for Public Good. That translated into
- Keeping the governor’s commitment that the state would develop nearly 2,800 units of affordable housing at Creedmoor and 1091 units of affordable housing at Kingsboro;
- Expanding the strategy for Public Land for Public Good to include the development of affordable housing on city-owned and NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA) land; and,
- Launching a major initiative to explore the development of land owned by congregations and improving existing affordable apartment buildings through relentless code enforcement.
NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development First Deputy Commissioner Ahmed Tigani committed to work with Queens Power and EBC to develop strategies for city-owned land and improve existing affordable buildings. He also reported that the seven current Senior First sites under development would not have happened without Metro IAF NY’s work to create senior apartment buildings on NYCHA land. Because of Metro IAF NY, over a thousand seniors will now have quality housing.
Queens Power and EBC joined Metro IAF NY to champion Public Land for Public Good by committing to raise $5 million to launch a campaign to assist faith-based organizations in building over one thousand affordable units on congregational land to help solve the affordability crisis. Queens Power and EBC have already raised $1.5 million for pre-development loans to jump-start congregations’ efforts. Martin Trimble, Co-Director of IAF/Metro IAF, made a major announcement: Metro IAF committed to invest $2.5 million in the Metro IAF NY pre-development loan pool. Queens Power and EBC are actively raising the final $1 million.
