On Sunday, March 30, public housing tenants, clergy, and community allies from Manhattan Together, East Brooklyn Congregations, South Bronx Churches, and the broader Metro IAF NY network gathered at Monte Sion Christian Church on the Lower East Side.
The event celebrated significant progress in improving the quality of life for residents of New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) apartments, mainly through the independent mold and leak Ombudsperson Call Center (OCC). However, with many tenants still facing serious challenges, leaders outlined an agenda for further action. Recent conversations with over 500 tenants informed this agenda and will be a focal point in the 2025 mayoral race and beyond.
NYCHA Executive Vice President Daniel Greene committed to working with Metro IAF NY to ensure that tenants are no longer forced to miss work or personal obligations for repairs that fail to take place.
Congressman Ritchie Torres reaffirmed his partnership with the organization, pledging to address persistent issues in NYCHA, including rat, roach, and garbage infestations. He also emphasized the need to expand on the OCC’s success and to hold negligent RAD/PACT developers accountable.
Metro IAF NY remains committed to securing tangible improvements for NYCHA residents and ensuring that elected and appointed officials uphold their responsibilities to tenants.
