Pictured: BUILD's February Action in support of the Bill

This May, BUILD celebrated its 2-year organizing victory when Maryland Governor signed into law SB 937 — the Fair Chance Housing Act. This historic bill will make housing access easier for 1 million people with a record in Maryland, making it more difficult for landlords to discriminate against them.

This victory followed the long-term efforts of BUILD leaders and allies who organized, testified, traveled to Annapolis, shared their stories, and stayed in the fight for the long haul. The effort began by BUILD listening to more than 1,000 people in Maryland with a record, asking them what the biggest barriers were to getting back on their feet.

The Fair Chance Housing Act as well as the Clean Slate (HB360/SB483) bills will help provide second chances for people coming home from jail and prison, reducing barriers to housing, employment, and stability.
